ABOUT US
BASMA is a national organization formed to support, organize, and empower Black artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) in South Africa. Our mission is to provide legal support, access to licensing, safety training, and collective marketing power while holding large mining corporations accountable for environmental and human rights abuses in marginalized communities.

To be a leading voice and catalyst for the legal, safe, and sustainable integration of Black artisanal and small-scale miners into the formal mining economy of South Africa.
OUR MISSION
- To legalise and formalise ASM operations, especially in rural and peri-urban areas.
- To promote environmental safety and community involvement in mining practices.
- To facilitate access to mining licences, markets, funding, and equipment.
- To develop skills and create jobs for local youth, women, and ex-mineworkers.
- To advocate for inclusive mining policies that reflect the voice of the marginalised.
