Empowering the backbone of Africa's mining future

ABOUT US

BASMA is a national organization formed to support, organize, and empower Black artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) in South Africa. Our mission is to provide legal support, access to licensing, safety training, and collective marketing power while holding large mining corporations accountable for environmental and human rights abuses in marginalized communities.

OUR VISION

To be a leading voice and catalyst for the legal, safe, and sustainable integration of Black artisanal and small-scale miners into the formal mining economy of South Africa.

Our Work

Two women with tablet

We assist communities and informal miners in acquiring mining permits and navigating the regulatory framework in collaboration with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE).

We educate miners on eco-friendly practices and work with stakeholders to reduce illegal mining and environmental degradation.

We link members with offtake agreements, traders, and refineries for better prices and transparency.

Our training programs focus on mining safety, business skills, geology, and mineral processing.

We engage with traditional leaders, mining companies, government departments (DMRE, COGTA, DTI), and investors to create a supportive ecosystem.

Strategic Objectives

01

Register 5,000+ artisanal miners and co-ops under BASMA’s umbrella.

02

Facilitate 1,000 mining permits for community-owned mining projects.

03

Establish training hubs in 9 provinces by 2027.

04

Launch BASMA Mineral Traders, a cooperative market access platform.

05

Lobby for the creation of a dedicated ASM legalisation programme with the DMRE.
